BOAT 3D SCANNING

Boat 3D Scanning Services

There are many uses for 3D scanning boats. Let’s look at the top 5 reasons why boat owners are utilising our 3D scanning services;

1. 3D scanning boats captures the many complex surfaces and measurements quickly and accurately. Trying to achieve this using traditional methods would take weeks. Having such reliable data makes boat refits and repairs much more uncomplicated.

2. 3D Scans for refits and repairs are very popular. You can create exact measurements of the existing space. When your ordering bespoke parts and fittings you will know they will fit perfectly the first time.
3. 3D scanning the hull of a yacht enables designers to simulate the design’s performance in the water—valuable information for racing yacht designers.

4. Many old boats that are currently on the water have no drawings. Drawings are useful for refits, repairs and insurance purposes. A 3D scan of a vessel can provide a detailed blueprint of the boat’s actual condition within the house.

5. 3D Scans are perfect for recording data on historic vessels, as it is a non-contact method of recording data. 3D scans enable historians to create an exact blueprint of historic ships, allowing the creation of 3d printed models.

We also offer 3D scanning for cars, motorbikes & aerospace clients.

3D Scanning FAQ's

Not sure if 3D scanning can help you? Not sure if you object’s right for 3D scanning?

We’ve got some common FAQ’s that might help you decide.

As we’ve said, we use structured light 3D scanning here at Surface Scan. However, it does come with a few limitations. Don’t worry, though; we have ways of getting over most issues.

Maybe you already have the 3D scan data and need another service?

Here is a more detailed explanation on what is structured light scanning.

Let’s say you wrapped an object in cling film and it took the form of that shape and every tiny detail. You then remove the item without altering the cling film, your left with your object’s exterior shape, a mesh or point cloud. This data can then be used for various purposes.

Most files we send are in the format of an STL or an OBJ.  If we’ve reverse engineered your data, we would typically send it as either a STEP or IGES file.

Generally, we’ll send your data over secure servers or portable storage devices, whichever works best for you.

Absolutely, we offer a complete mobile service. We cover all of the UK.

Yes, not a problem. Just bear in mind the postage costs and how big or heavy your object is.

Scanning shiny or dark objects can be tricky for most 3D scanners. The way around this is to spray the item with a non-reflective spray. Don’t worry, though; it comes evaporates from shiny or dark objects.

We use 3D scanners that scan using structured light. It projects a pattern onto the surface of the object and cameras data.

Have you got handmade a prototype? Do you need to reverse an old mould? Or maybe you want to create custom car parts? The list goes on, but if you have a problem and need a solution, we’re here to help.

If we haven’t answered all your questions, please get in touch.  We will be happy to discuss your project.

Advantages of 3D Scanning

Saves time when designing products – If your product design is based on an existing object, then 3D scanning can capture every detail of the part—providing you with the data to design a matching piece that fits perfectly. Or if you are altering a current design, you can use our 3D scan data as a good starting point.

Simplify the prototype process – Our 3D scanning services can reduce the number of prototype cycles needed. You can also compare the 3D scan data between each version. The 3D Scan process will also highlight any design flaws.

Improved Quality Control – You can use the 3D scan data to check the quality of your product. You can also check the scale and stability of the product. It is perfect for the manufacturing process, whether it’s 3d printing, CNC milling or injection moulding, you can spot deviations immediately and rectify them quickly.

Re-manufacture parts without CAD Drawings – Want to re-manufacture parts but don’t have the original drawing? By using our 3D scanning services, you can create an exact drawing within hours. By reverse-engineering the scan data, you can design a new product. You can then compare the drawing for the old and new products.

Keeping costs down – All of the above points save time during the designing, prototyping, and manufacturing processes. As we all know, time is money. Utilising our 3D scanning services can make the design process 75% faster and 75% cheaper!

Scan to CAD

Our 3D scanning service is ideal for CAD users. We can capture exact detail using our 3D scanners. Then transfer this data into a 3D solid CAD model. 3D scanning is a much faster and more accurate way to collect data. We are saving you time and money.
If you work in CAD and want measurements from an obsolete part, this can be quite tricky. By using our 3D scanning services, we can create an accurate drawing within hours. This type of data is almost impossible to recreate by hand. We can provide you with accurate and detailed 3D scan data for a relatively low cost.
Lost CAD drawings are now a thing of the past. We can provide you with this information from a physical part. If you are ready to find out more about our 3D scanning services to CAD, please get in touch.

This is also a popular option for cultural artefact 3D scanning and medical digitisation.

Reverse Engineering

Our 3D scanning services and reverse engineering services work hand in hand. You can utilise the scan data to streamline the manufacturing process.

We will reverse engineer the data. You can design a part to fit on to the original part.

You can also redesign and improve upon the original object and remove design flaws from the original part.

Do you want to make your designing and manufacturing process more accurate and much simpler? Manufacturing better quality and more accurate parts? Then our 3D Scanning Services is the service you need.

If you would like to find out more, please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Our long-range 3D scanning equipment is able to quickly capture larger sections of bigger boats or even entire vessels.
